National Treasure

Nara Period

Tegai-mon Gate

This stately gate, with eight pillars, three bays and a single door, is the only structure remaining at Tōdai-ji that can evoke the architecture of the compound in the eighth century. Because of the legend that Taira Kagekiyo, a warrior from the Taira clan, hid in the gate waiting to try to kill the shōgun Minamoto no Yoritomo, it is sometimes called the “Kagekiyo Gate.”
